This house on the corner of two important streets of old Limassol indicates the taste and status of its owner, Iakovos Chatziloizou, a textile merchant. Geometry and simplicity rule in architecture: a clear bi-chromatic solution, stone and brick. The architect Odysseus Tsangarides (1907–1974) studied in Belgium and was for a long time the chief architect of Nicosia, the capital of Cyprus. Tsangarides built one of the first school complexes on the island — the English School in Nicosia (1936–1939), an example of subtle ArtDeco, which plays on English Gothic.
Let’s return to the mansion. Tassos Andreou writes about it in hisbook: “Inside, the interior develops around a huge central hall... the livingroom is dominated by the grand piano belonging to Kikitsa Solomonidou, the current owner of the house, who studied music in Brussels during the interwar period.”
Since the time Tassos wrote his poetic book, the pianist Kikitsa hasdied, the house has been turned into an office, and in 2017 the architect Antonios Protopapas restored it.
