The Agora in the ancient Greek polis was a market square that also served as a meeting place. A stone’s throw away from Anexartisias street, the old Agora market was turned into a food court not so long ago. And here, the clever developers of the 1980s decided to create another Agora.

Back then, Anexartisias Street was actively developing as a main shopping thoroughfare — unlike the small shops on Agiou Andreou Street, here the merchants set upon larger patterns: opening big shops and even the first shopping center, which we’ll soon see.

Walking inside the Agora Mall, you might feel the spirit of the 1980s — the billowing tracksuits, skateboards, bandanas. These lantern balls, the contours of the arches remind us of the commercial spaces a little bit anywhere those days. Agora Shopping Mall is remarkable in its attempt to create an interesting space: shopping streets within the building around a central gallery and even an inner piazzetta with a fountain.

It could have been a romantic spot for meetings and dates... But now it’s a resting place for food vendors. For some years, I have been observing the decline and death of the plants in the bollards here, lacking water and care. Commerce in the gallery seems long since ceased, and only the architecture reminds us of the broad life-building ambitions of the developers of Cyprus in an era of the 1980s.
